Because I’m good with languages, I was looking for a company that would allow me to work overseas.
I joined UACJ Metal Components Corporation because, although it’s a medium-sized company, it has transactions and bases abroad and offers the possibility of working overseas.
After I joined the company and completed my training, I was assigned to my current department and was immediately given the opportunity to visit three subsidiaries in the U.S. and Mexico.
Seeing them with my own eyes gave me a better understanding of local conditions, the people working there, and their working environment.
There are two subsidiaries in Mexico, and even though they are both located in the same country, each has its own characteristics and the atmosphere of the factory is different.
The experience still helps me when I review materials from each factory and have meetings with staff members from overseas factories.
COVID-19 prompted a rapid shift towards teleworking both in Japan and around the world.
Until then, it had been the norm to hold simple discussions on the phone or via e-mail and reserve in-depth discussions for business trips. But web conferencing now enables us to hold regular meetings without visiting the site in person.
At first, it was very difficult to hold meetings because of the time difference and the need to raise awareness of web conferencing. But after holding regular meetings at 10:00 pm on a set weeknight for several months, the perception of the local staff has changed, and we have been able to communicate with people we don't usually see face to face. This has noticeably boosted everyone’s motivation level.
I’m currently in charge of facility management and cost management at the plant.
When I look at facilities and expenses on a stand-alone basis, I don't notice much, but when I look at them chronologically or compare them with other plants, the detailed figures can reveal issues.
But simply telling people to cut costs will not get the message across, so I’ll present what I want to say in numbers, for example, using cost comparisons or budget implementation reports, and this results in actual action.
When it comes to equipment, units operate for more than ten years, so each on its own doesn’t tell you much. But when you look at them from the perspective of the entire plant or the entire company, regular malfunctions or repairs take time and result in operation time loss.
By performing regular inspections and systematic maintenance, we can proactively improve efficiency and reduce costs.
By keeping the bigger picture in mind, I believe that we are improving performance from the financial side.
The good thing about this company is that they actively let you do whatever you want to do.
For me, that’s learning about plant management and doing a job that allows me to transfer to an overseas base.
